The Best Point Guard
Chapter 239 - 48: Thank the Wolf King for His Coordination Talent
Magic thought Big Bird was becoming quite the smooth talker.
So, he blurted out with almost no hesitation, "That’s right. Jack watches my tapes all the time, which is why he resembles me in so many ways. But he still needs some professional guidance. I’ll head to Indiana and help him sharpen up that part of his game."
"That’s fantastic, Magic. I can’t wait to see Showtime back in the NBA," Larry Bird said, flattering him.
Magic basked in the compliment.
After hanging up from the long conversation, it finally occurred to Magic: ’Did I just get played?’
But on second thought, ’It’s not like I’m losing anything. Teaching the younger generation is exactly what an all-time great like me should be doing.’
Besides, he’d only be teaching for a few days. How much could Su Xi really learn?
’Plenty of NBA superstars run training camps, but it’s not like they’ve churned out any new ones,’ Magic thought to himself.
The whistle blew, signaling the start of the second half.
Garnett started playing more aggressively.
He was tilted.
He got the ball, attacked from the free-throw line, and used a shimmy into a spin move, finishing with a fadeaway jumper.
It was difficult for Little O’Neal to affect the arc of the shot; Garnett’s release point was just too high. His jumper was widely considered one of the most unstoppable offensive moves in the league.
On the other end, Artest drove to the basket. He bumped his defender out of the way and went up for a jumper... but Garnett was there to contest. Garnett got his fingertips on the ball, altering its arc. Just as it was about to fall short, Su Xi slashed in from the side, soared up, caught the ball with his long arms and massive hands, and forcibly stuffed it through the rim... BOOM!
A monster dunk.
"Perfect assist!"
Su Xi shouted.
Garnett, who had already balled his fist and was about to pound his chest, froze mid-motion. A wave of frustration washed over him.
What should have been his block had just turned into someone else’s assist. He felt suffocated by the frustration.
And to make matters worse, it was a collaboration between the two people he detested most.
Watching Su Xi and Artest high-five made him feel utterly humiliated, as if he’d been slapped across the face.
On the other end, he ran a pick-and-roll with Cassell. After rolling to the basket, he received the pass. Su Xi was defending him tightly. He shook Su Xi with a quick spin, but as he was about to dunk, Su Xi forcefully pulled him down.
Su Xi had fouled him to stop a surefire dunk.
Garnett was furious. He glared at Su Xi. "Is that how you play defense?"
"Yup," Su Xi replied, nodding earnestly. "Don’t you like this style of defense?"
CLANK!
SWISH!
He made one of two.
Garnett’s composure was shot; he was seething with rage.
Su Xi noticed this. As the ball was being inbounded, he made a point of telling Little O’Neal, "Let’s switch on him more."
Little Ao agreed without hesitation.
Back on offense, Su Xi once again passed to Artest. Artest’s technical skills were just average, but he was incredibly tough. He attacked the paint, again drawing help from Garnett. He bumped Garnett and passed the ball back out to Su Xi, who was waiting to facilitate. Su Xi faked a drive but then passed the ball to the corner for Reggie Miller, who let it fly... SWISH!
The lead grew.
The crowd at the Target Center grew increasingly anxious.
Garnett grew even more irritated. A game that should have been a nail-biter was turning into a blowout, and he was not happy. Watching Su Xi effortlessly pad his stats, in particular, sent him into a rage.
After crossing half-court, the ball was supposed to go to the Madman, but Garnett took it himself again.
He posted up Little O’Neal. They were similarly matched in strength, and Garnett’s post technique wasn’t that much more refined than Little O’Neal’s.
But Garnett’s talent was clearly on another level. It was the kind of talent that goes down in history. He had the height of a center, the speed of a forward, the agility of a guard, a monster vertical, and his coordination was off the charts.
By the Little Elf’s standards, Garnett had at least four super-tier talents. On top of that, all of his other attributes were also top-notch.
His overall average was definitely at an all-time great level.
So, Garnett forced a spin, then exploded straight up for the shot. Normally, his shot was unblockable. A legendary story circulated among fans in China about Garnett being able to touch the top of the backboard. Of course, that story was almost certainly false.
But there was no denying that Garnett’s leaping ability was in a class of its own.
Blocking him head-on was impossible.
Unless...
Su Xi flashed in from behind. He had perfectly timed Garnett’s spin and shooting motion. As he charged in and leaped, swinging his hand, Garnett rose into his shot at the exact right instant... SMACK!
Su Xi sent the ball flying with a vicious slap.
The crowd erupted.
ROAR!
Before Su Xi could celebrate, Artest rushed in, pounded his chest, and let out a roar in imitation of Garnett.
Garnett gritted his teeth in fury.
He shouted directly at Su Xi, "You dare guard me face-up?" 𝑓𝑟𝑒𝘦𝓌𝑒𝑏𝑛𝑜𝘷𝑒𝘭.𝒸𝘰𝑚
It was a ridiculous question.
Garnett was the height of a center. Playing power forward at seven-foot-one was already a bit of an exploit. Now he was actually demanding a six-foot-four guard defend him head-on.
If word got out about this, how embarrassing would that be?
You’d have to be completely tilted to say something like that.
But then, the unthinkable happened... Su Xi agreed.
"Fine. As you wish."
Su Xi moved to guard Garnett directly. Garnett popped out to the perimeter, sealed Su Xi behind him, and called for the ball.
His post-up position was excellent; Su Xi was unable to front him.
As soon as Garnett got the ball, Su Xi immediately dug in, using all his strength to hold his ground.
By now, Su Xi’s Super Strength talent had been integrated up to 97. Of course, because of his physical frame and weight, his 97 strength couldn’t be compared to the 97 of a massive center. Power output is still limited by sheer tonnage.
