Chapter 149: ’Academic’ Test

Obviously, she passed pretty easily and I was worried that the plants she sprouted would remain but it looks like her ability also allowed her to reverse the plant growth as well.

With a wave of her hand, the vines reversed themselves and returned to the seeds that I realised were the things she had thrown at first.

She then walked over to join Dan and I, looking quite nervous despite how well she did.

"Hey, good job. That was pretty cool," I praised her.

"Eh? Ah... Thank you... It... It really isn’t much," She murmured, her hand reaching up to hide her face despite her hood already doing that for her.

She joined our side shyly, maintaining a small distance between us before she looked up at Ava and let out a soft gasp.

Ava turned to tilt her head at the cloaked woman while giving her a smile, seemingly wondering if there was anything wrong.

The cloaked woman probably recognised Ava as one of the people who was there that day when I saved her.

I’m not sure if Ava remembered her as she didn’t show any signs of recognising the woman... Though maybe it’s more because of the fact that she had her face covered.

"Ara? Well done~ It’s rare to see a Chloromancer here~" Ava praised.

"Eh? Ah... Umm... Thank you very much..."

"Fufufu~ There’s no need to be nervous~ I would say you are doing quite well so far~ Don’t you agree?" Ava asked, turning to me.

I’m not sure if that was her asking me as a fellow participant or she was asking me as the Mortal God.

I shrugged, "Her ability is definitely strong. Especially seeing how quickly she could activate it as well, I think she has a good chance of passing."

"Fufufu~ I agree completely~"

The blue haired woman turned away out of embarrassment while reaching up to pretend she was busy fixing her hair.

The next few contestants also started challenging the mech, most of them being emboldened by how we had three successes in a row.

I’m not sure if this was by design but it seems like all the human participants were completely inadequate and were easily taken out by the mech.

I suspect that this was done so that we could say that we at least interviewed a few humans but they just turned out to be inadequate so we weren’t completely playing favourites with the other worlders.

I don’t even know why they saw the need to do that because I was pretty sure that the complaints wouldn’t matter anyway.

My best guess was to just lessen the criticisms instead of just accepting the full brunt of it.

On another note, most of the other worlders also did not pass the test either as it seems like most of them did not have combat related skills.

Those that did pass mostly did so because they managed to last against the mech and not because they defeated it.

One other person who managed to pass was a pale skinned woman with red eyes and black lips that was wearing a black goth outfit who simply raised her hand and caused the mech to stop moving completely.

The first thing I thought was that she’s a vampire and I believe I was correct as she flashed me a smile when she walked past and I noticed the very obvious fangs in her mouth.

Also... Why is she smiling at me like that?

On another note, I thought that those who did not pass the mech test would be failed by Ava and Maylene on the spot but Maylene simply noted down some stuff on her notepad before she hopped over to the mech.

"Alright!! This is the first part of the test completed! Don’t worry if you didn’t manage to pass this! This is only one of the things we are using to evaluate you! There are still other tests that can make up for it later! Follow us!"

Both Maylene and Ava then led the way through the door they had come from earlier while leaving the mech behind.

The rest of us followed along and I noted that those guys who had bumped into me earlier were now exceptionally quiet and subdued. Although they were also shooting me angry glares for some reason.

I was walking right behind the elf who had, for some reason, opted to walk on her feet instead of floating on her staff like before.

I had a slight feeling that the reason was the very attention grabbing bottom that was swaying left and right in front of me as she walked but surely that can’t be the reason... Right?

I was so distracted by it that I nearly ran into her when we stopped in what looked like a classroom.

There were tables and chairs that looked like school desks all arranged to face the front of the room where a podium and even a whiteboard was set up.

This is a classroom, isn’t it? I’m going to guess that they made this place specifically for the Bunarfs so that they can attend classes to learn about this World or something...

Maylene and Ava went up to the podium to take their positions while the bunny girl gestured towards the room with a big smile on her face.

"Go on! Take a seat! It’s free seating so just take any spot that’s open!"

We shuffled to obey and I decided to take the standard ’protagonist’ seat, which was the one in the back corner of the room. The only thing that was missing were windows but this entire room did not have any so oh well...

Also... I get why Dan is sitting beside me... But it looks like the cloaked woman and that goth woman had also chosen to take the seat in front and diagonally in front of me respectively.

Why are they sticking to me?

I was wondering what this was for when Maylene started hopping down the columns to pass out a stack of papers to each person to get them to pass them down to the people behind them.

When I got my stack that was stapled together, I couldn’t help but suck in a breath as I felt trauma from my childhood resurfacing.

They couldn’t be asking us to take some academic exam are they?

Because if they are... I’m going to just give up and run out of here right now.

There’s no way I’m going to let myself sit through another exam, ok?!

Maylene hopped back over to the front to jump up to the podium.

"Alright!! Being a Guardian isn’t just about the physical aspect but also the mental aspect! Here, we would like to see your own personal thoughts on being a Guardian so please answer the questions as truthfully as possible! In the event that you pass the tests, we would also be using what you have answered here to decide your position as a Guardian! So it won’t benefit you if you do not answer honestly!" 𝗳𝐫𝚎𝗲𝚠𝚎𝗯𝕟𝐨𝘃𝚎𝗹.𝗰𝗼𝗺

Oh, good... So it’s not an academic test then...

Dan turned to give me a side eye, "I really thought you guys were going to make me answer some maths questions or something..."

I couldn’t tell him I had the same idea too...

Well... If it’s just a test to see what these people’s thoughts are to assign them to a position as a Guardian... Then I guess I’m really not needed here...

But I’m still a little curious what kind of questions they would ask so I’ll just stick around to find out.

Maylene then gestured towards us, "Whenever you’re ready, you may begin!"

I picked up the pen that had been left at the front of the table and flipped open to the first page to look at the first question.

Let’s see...

’You are in the middle of a fight when a group of Anomalies have split themselves into two groups. One of them is going towards the Mortal God and will overwhelm him if they reach him while the other group is going to a group of powerless civilians who will get slaughtered if you do not intervene. What will you do?’

...

What the heck? Isn’t this like the trolley problem right from the start? Is there even a right answer for this?!

Instead of answering, I just looked at the next question.

’You come across the Mortal God cutting down several unarmed people while they cower in fear. What do you do?’

...

What the heck is this question?! I’m pretty sure they made these questions with me in mind so why are they even presenting a scenario like this to begin with?!

What’s the next one?!

’The Mortal God has given you an order to abandon your position to rush straight towards an army of Anomalies with no backup. What do you do?’

Ok... This entire thing feels like it’s making me out to be the bad guy here? Is this how you guys really see me?

Who do I complain to for this?
