Chapter 28: Chapter 28: The Implacable Shermans

Sophia Shaw’s anger flared, the beauty mark by her eye turning as red as if it were dipped in blood!

She strode over. "Stop!" 𝒻𝓇𝑒𝘦𝘸𝑒𝒷𝓃ℴ𝑣𝘦𝑙.𝒸ℴ𝘮

"Faye." Seeing Sophia Shaw, June Evans’s eyes reddened with grievance.

Life was already hard enough, and now the Shermans were being this relentless.

Sophia Shaw pushed away the hands on June Evans and glared coldly at the crowd. "If you want to tear up the road, this isn’t how you do it!"

"Then how do you want us to do it?"

The people in front of her all knew Sophia Shaw wasn’t valued in the Grant family, so they didn’t take her seriously at all. The question was utterly insincere.

When Sharon Sherman saw Sophia Shaw, daggers shot from her eyes, and her desire for harsh revenge intensified.

She deliberately pointed at the Shaw family’s courtyard and said, "Not just this road. The trees in your yard are blocking our light—they all have to be chopped down!"

"And that wall! It extends a meter further than what’s on the blueprints. That has to be torn down too!"

"That’s right!" Selina Zelia and Brian Sherman nodded in agreement.

The other Shermans chimed in, stirring up trouble.

Watching them bully her like this, June Evans trembled with rage, tears welling in her eyes.

Sophia Shaw pursed her lips. "Is there no room for discussion?"

"Do we look like we’re here to discuss things with you?" Susan Sawyer puffed out her chest, looking smug.

Every time she thought about the day Sophia Shaw had forced her to kneel, she gritted her teeth in hatred.

"This is a notice!"

"If you’re willing to get on your knees and beg us, we might give you an hour to move out!"

An hour was nowhere near enough time to move!

The Shermans’ intentions were painfully obvious—they just wanted to make their lives miserable!

June Evans clenched her fists. "You’re just bullies!"

"So what if we are?" Sharon Sherman was incredibly arrogant. "You should think about how you bullied my aunt and cousin!"

"This is your karma!"

’It was clearly Yvonne Sherman and Joanna Sherman who bullied my mother, leeching off her blood, sweat, and tears. And now they’re twisting it to say we bullied them?’

Even Sophia Shaw’s body tensed, her fingers clenching tightly into fists.

June Evans’s heart raced, and thinking of the injustices her sister-in-law had suffered made her own heart ache as if it would burst.

"What do you mean, bullying? It was you, all of you..."

As she spoke, June Evans looked ready to fight the Shermans to the death.

Sophia Shaw grabbed her arm sharply. "Aunt June, if they want to do this, let them do it their way!"

She then pulled June Evans back with her.

June Evans looked at Sophia Shaw, confused.

Seeing Sophia Shaw back down so easily like a pushover, the Shermans assumed she was easy to bully and all sneered at her with contempt and ridicule.

"Turns out she’s just a coward!"

"No wonder Joanna and Vincent Grant are being so high-profile. This one here hasn’t dared to make a peep!"

"She’s not even as good as that mother of hers."

"Spineless!"

Sharon Sherman, arm-in-arm with Selina Zelia and Brian Sherman, crowded around Patricia Holloway and said, "Grandma, hurry up and call my great-aunt and cousin! We have to celebrate tonight!"

"What’s the rush?" Sophia Shaw interrupted coolly.

She pointed at the surrounding houses. "Those structures on your roofs are blocking my family’s light, too. Since we’re tearing things down, let’s tear those down together."

Everyone looked up at the rooftops of their own houses, and their faces darkened.

Those structures were rooftop gardens, complete with exquisite and comfortable pavilions, gazebos, and even greenhouses, all built at a cost of tens of millions.

’Tear down such elaborate structures? Is Sophia Shaw blind?’

Just as the crowd was about to start cursing, Sophia Shaw added lightly, "Those structures are illegal constructions. The original blueprints clearly state that nothing can be planted and no buildings can be erected there."

"That’s out of the question! If we tear down the rooftop gardens, who knows how much the value of these houses will plummet!"

"Without the rooftop gardens, these are just old houses. How could we invite friends over to hang out?"

"We’d be a laughingstock!"

The Shermans had moved in precisely for these rooftop gardens, planning to invite friends over to play and show off.

"Even if we agreed to tear them down, who’s going to pay for it? It would cost hundreds of thousands!"

They weren’t easy to build, and they won’t be easy to tear down either.

The Shermans were all useless baggage; where would they find the several hundred thousand needed to demolish the rooftop gardens?

Sophia Shaw acted as if she hadn’t heard a thing, taking the blueprints and saying to June Evans, "Aunt June, I see on the blueprints that the original road went through here. The walls that need to be knocked down should be knocked down as soon as possible, and everything that needs to be demolished should be demolished!"

When the crowd looked at the blueprints, they were ready to faint again.

According to the original blueprints, the road to Yancy Shaw’s house wound through every family’s courtyard.

If they were to restore the original access now, it would mean every household would have to knock down two sections of their walls, making their courtyards like they had two open gates.

The Shaws would be coming and going through their courtyards... They wouldn’t even be able to close their gates at night.

Wide open for all to see!

What would be the difference from living on a public street!

What about security!

June Evans saw this and beamed. "Great! Let’s do it! I’ll call someone to knock them down right now!"

’And here I thought Sophia was backing down.’

’Turns out she was going to give the Shermans a taste of their own medicine!’

Having just been bullied so badly, June Evans wasn’t about to be polite. She took out her phone and started to dial.

"You can’t!" Sharon Sherman jumped out frantically, grabbing June Evans’s hand to stop her from dialing.

Patricia Holloway also put her hands on her hips and roared fiercely, "You dare!"

Selina Zelia and Brian Sherman warned viciously, "Get a grip on the situation! Do you think you can just tear down property belonging to the Sherman family whenever you feel like it?"

"And don’t forget the relationship between our Joanna and Vincent Grant!"

"Why don’t we take a trip to the courthouse, then?"

Sophia Shaw tilted her head. Her beautiful face was cold, and the beauty mark by her eye was a dazzling red.

"I can’t make the final decision, but surely the court can provide a fair judgment."

"Fine by me! Who’s afraid of..."

Patricia Holloway was cut off mid-sentence by Sharon Sherman.

"Grandma!"

She shook her head frantically, trying to signal with her eyes.

Selina Zelia didn’t understand at first and was about to scold Sharon Sherman, but Brian Sherman pulled her back.

"What kind of place is a court? If this really goes to court, everyone will know."

"Think about it. Our Joanna and Vincent Grant aren’t..."

Brian Sherman gestured toward Sophia Shaw, implying that she was still Mrs. Grant.

Once this blows up, what will people on the outside say?

The only reason they dared to be so high-profile was because they were relying on the relationship between Joanna Sherman and Vincent Grant.

If that relationship was brought into the open, Joanna Sherman would be exposed as the other woman!

Selina Zelia finally understood, and a cold sweat broke out on her back.

She glared viciously at Sophia Shaw.

’This damned woman is clearly determined to blow this whole thing up!’

Joanna was the first woman in Cathan to lead a rocket launch, and only the second to do so after Lead Aerospace.

She was held in extremely high regard by both the public and the government, who had great hopes for her. At a time like this, she absolutely could not have a single stain on her reputation!

Although the Shermans were arrogant, they could still tell what was important. They fell silent, and no one dared to utter another word.

Sophia Shaw glanced at the crowd, her gaze icy. "Fix the road within twenty minutes, or we’ll see each other in court!"

"And not just in court! We’ll also call the housing bureau, the city planning department, property management, and the media!"

June Evans despised the Shermans and deliberately listed each one.

She would say whatever they feared most.

"With so many people watching, I wonder if you still care about your dignity!"

"Oh, for heaven’s sake."

Ever since Joanna Sherman had returned, Patricia Holloway had been fawned over wherever she went.

She was always the one stepping on others, never the one being stepped on like this. She stomped her feet in a fit of rage.

She shouted nonstop, "This is outrageous! The Shaws are bullying us again!"

June Evans pretended not to hear, linked her arm with Sophia Shaw’s, and walked past them with her head held high.
