Chapter 113: Rumors

Janice and Christopher looked at each other and said, "Grandpa, we don’t have any plans for today, so we want to keep you company."

Old Mr. Allson didn’t say anything more. He just told to be careful when they handle the boxes.

One by one, Janice opened up all the boxes around them. She found that they were filled with something similar to a sealed document.

She was confused. "These are..."

Old Mr. Allson stopped and looked over. He said, "These are manuscripts that she wrote before she passed away. I’m afraid that they will go moldy. So I take them out to dry every year."

Upon hearing this, Janice was a little surprised. However, she looked at the box and thought to herself, "If these boxes were filled with handwritten manuscripts, wouldn’t there be enough content to be published into novels?"

She said, "Grandpa, why don’t you publish these? That way, you don’t need to be afraid of them getting lost or damaged."

Old Mr. Allson sighed and said, "For me, what is precious is not the content, but the manuscripts themselves."

Old Mr. Allson couldn’t help but stare at the distant sky.

Janice suddenly had an idea.

She knew what birthday present she was going to give him.

It was Monday. As soon as Janice arrived at the TV station, she went straight to the storage room in the station.

There were all kinds of information stored in this place. All the history and development of the station could be found here.

If she wanted to find the best way to store information, here would undoubtedly be the best place.

She walked in and knocked on the office door.

"Who is it?"

Karen, who was the document administrator poked her head out from the table.

"Hi Karen, I’m Janice Gladwell. I’m from the new variety show department."

As she spoke, she showed her work permit.

Karen glanced at her and asked, "What’s the matter?"

Janice said honestly, "To tell you the truth, I’m here to ask you some questions about how to store a manuscript. Can you help me?"

"Of course, come in."

Karen opened the door.

Janice walked in. After consulting Karen, she thanked her again and again before leaving.

However, she didn’t know that Denise came over as soon as she left. Denise stared at Janice’s departing figure. Then she furrowed her eyebrows and walked towards Karen.

"Why is she here?"

Karen quickly replied to Denise since she was the new boss. "She asked me about the ways to store manuscripts."

Denise frowned. Why would Janice ask such a question?

She returned the files and turned to leave.

Janice returned to her seat and sent a WhatsApp message to Yvonne.

"Yvonne, let’s go shopping after work."

Yvonne was probably busy, so she did not reply immediately. Janice put her phone aside and prepared to work.

Denise came to Janice’s place as soon as she clicked the file on her computer. She placed a document on Janice’s desk and said, "These are the list of questions that the reporters will ask later in the press conference. Read it carefully. Don’t make any mistakes."

Her tone was strictly business. There was no other emotion in her tone.

Naturally, Janice was not the type of person who liked to stir up trouble. Even though she had mocked Denise openly in the restaurant yesterday, as long as Denise didn’t cause any hassle for her at work, she wouldn’t be a troublemaker.

She picked it up and nodded. "Got it."

Denise didn’t say anything more. But she curled her lips coldly before she left.

...

After Denise left, Janice glanced at the list. They were all common questions for press conference. There were no difficult ones among them.

She put the document aside and began to deal with her own work.

At about 10 o’clock, the crew of The Tide of Love held a press conference in the conference hall.

It was a usual practice in the industry.

There would usually be a press conference to promote the show before airing.

As soon as she sat down, a reporter came forward to ask her a question.

"Excuse me, Ms. Gladwell, I heard that Director Taylor was your ex-boyfriend. Can you tell us more about it?"

Janice was startled. That question wasn’t listed on the list.

She was not sure if the reporter had asked the question spontaneously or if there was something wrong with the list.

She replied, "Please ask me questions related to the show. Thank you."

"Ms. Gladwell, I heard that you were recruited for this show because you managed to pull some strings. Is that true?"

Another reporter asked.

It was another question she had no idea how to answer.

The question before this might have been spontaneous, but this question was obviously per-planned.

This was definitely part of a plan.

Sure enough, all the subsequent questions revolved around how she pulled strings to get selected for the show and her relationship with Benjamin Taylor.

She finally understood that the press conference wasn’t a promotion for the show itself, but to cast doubt on her credibility as the host.

Facing the cameras in front of her, Janice glanced at the crowd down the stage and saw Denise. She was standing not far away from the stage.

When she looked at Denise, Denise was looking at her too.

They locked gazes.

Denise was looking at her defiantly. She didn’t even try to hide her intention.

Janice gritted her teeth. Indeed, she was the one behind this.

"Ms. Gladwell, please answer the questions."

The reporters urged her as she remained silent.

Janice was furious, and snapped at them, "Please follow the rules. Any questions that have nothing to do with the program will be rejected."

After that, Janice went straight to Denise. "What are you trying to do?" She asked furiously.

It was the first time she had experienced being set-up at the warm-up press briefing. After all, this would affect the ratings of the show. "How dare you do this to the show?"

Denise stared at her angry face and said innocently, "I don’t know why they suddenly asked you those questions. Perhaps they think that they’ll get some coverage if they sensationalize things."

"What’s the point?" Janice sneered. "Why would anyone be interested in my private life? Shouldn’t they focus the questions on the program itself?"

Denise frowned.

"Maybe the marketing department did this. After all, the program hasn’t been broadcast yet. The show would only blow up if there’s an inside story. Janice, you are the host. The program has yet to be broadcast. If there’s gossip on the host, won’t it attract more attention from the audience?"

"So, you asked the reporters to ask me those questions?"

Denise replied, "I’ve already told you. I’m not responsible for that."

Janice thought it was ridiculous that Denise was being calm about things.

"Director Kelshore, whether or not you ordered them, I have to warn you not to treat the program as a joke. The show is not a tool for your personal revenge."

"Janice, you have the wrong idea. I would never be so unprofessional." Denise put on a deliberately sad expression.

...

Janice thought that she was ridiculous. How could she still argue with Denise?

She was too naive.

She sneered in her heart.

"I hope you really didn’t do it."

After that, she turned around and stormed off.

Janice left the press conference in a huff. Everyone was gossiping about her all along the way.

"I see, she was Director Taylor’s ex-girlfriend."

"That’s right. I was wondering how a no-name reporter like her would suddenly become the host. She obviously pulled strings to get that position."

Janice felt uncomfortable as her colleagues were gossiping one after another.

Surprisingly, the news had spread in the whole station in a short while.

"Janice, are you really Director Taylor’s ex-girlfriend?"

At noon, Lucy sat down in front of her in the canteen and asked.

At that point, Janice did not want to hide anything anymore.

She looked at Lucy and confessed.

"I’m sorry, Lucy. I didn’t tell you that before, but it was all in the past."

Janice lowered her gaze.

Lucy stared at her and was silent, although she found it hard to digest when she first knew about it. After all, she had asked Janice about her relationship with Benjamin more than once.

But Janice had never once told her the truth.

She gave it some thought. If it was her, she wouldn’t tell anyone too.

After all, it would be too embarrassing.

She thought for a moment and said, "When I first heard about it, I was very unhappy, but since you said it was in the past, what else can I say?"

Lucy glared at her as she spoke.

Janice was grateful. After all, Lucy had a crush on Benjamin before. It was difficult for her to forgive Janice for her deception.

Plus, Lucy was her only friend in the TV station. If Lucy had a grudge because of this matter, Janice would be completely alone.

"Thank you for your understanding." Janice said with relief.

Although Lucy understood her, she was still helpless in the face of her colleagues’ gossip.

She couldn’t explain it to everyone one by one.

She could only pretend that she did not hear anything when others were gossiping about her.

However, even if she chose to be silent, some people would humiliate her directly.

As soon as she and Lucy walked out of the canteen, they met Linda, who was about to enter.

Janice saw Linda but she had no intention to greet her. After all, they did not get along well with each other.

But how could Linda miss the opportunity to ridicule her? She stopped in front of them and said, "You know, I often wondered how could you become the host of a new show without a shred of experience. No wonder, you pulled strings and depended on Director Taylor."

Linda spoke with obvious disdain.

Janice was quiet. She wouldn’t deny that she probably got the position thanks to Benjamin.

Linda walked away with disgust when she saw that Janice didn’t refute a word of what she said.

Lucy comforted her. "Let’s go. Janice. Just ignore her."

Janice nodded and left with Lucy.

They walked to the elevator and waited for it.

Lucy glanced at her gloomy face and said, "Janice, you don’t have to mind them. Relationships are the foundation of the business world. So what if you were personally selected for the show thanks to your relationship with Benjamin? That’s a useful ability on its own. You know how to involve yourself with the right people. Isn’t that necessary for us in this field?"

Janice felt slightly comforted after listening to Lucy.

In actual fact, she wasn’t upset because her relationship with Benjamin was exposed. She was sad because others ignored her earnest efforts and focused on her relationship with Benjamin exclusively.
