Master Of None
Chapter 2888. Bigger Picture
Gil figured that he and Walker would help enough that Su wouldn’t need to worry when she got back from her personal trip. But Gil could also understand that she might take control of the guard plans once she returned especially since she had the best knowledge about which guards would excel in the position.
"We had her come to the better guarded areas of where Alma has her office. It’s easier than trying to split a separate guard group. Plus, if I have to say so, the guards for Alma are mostly for show. She has been training whenever she has free time as if I wouldn’t notice. She thinks resting will be more harmful than good right now."
Gil laughed a bit and Walker could only shrug and chuckle too. Knowing Alma, she was too strong willed to be told she should actually relax. Instead, it was a surety that she would try to get stronger despite expecting a child. Even if she did rest, the odds were she would feel too stir crazy to actually relax.
Even though Walker and the entire party were actually considered workaholics, Alma had become one the moment she stepped forward on her path to become a literal queen. Even more so within Genesis where she stood to represent more than just the elven race.
"I didn’t ask for candy, I said that we should consider the rate at which much candy will decay when storing it in larger quantities. If I want to open sweet shops later I will need to know this when I hire someone and when I procure the inventory."
The rant came from a younger girl sitting on a larger table covered in papers. She seemed more like a student overwhelmed by a test she was being given rather than an apprentice learning and pushing for new knowledge.
The context was odd. It didn’t sound like this was a merchant apprentice who had been working on running a warehouse alone for weeks or months. It seems more like a girl who was chasing a dream founded on sweets.
"Gil! You said I could learn more data about food stalls and storage, but the data here is so small. Who is compiling all this-"
"Bea, please stop pushing everyone for more and more information. The merchant guild gathers what it can and that’s that. If you hound everyone for more paperwork, you won’t have good merchant connections to make better trades later."
From how Gil was acting, it appeared he had already dealt with this stuff before.
"But what about the storage life of everything? I can’t save money and buy shops I want to invest in if I can’t get the information. You already cut my ties with the group that abandoned me and the warehouse, so now I need more information to make it through the future. I need plans!"
While she was clearly smaller and shorter because of her age, her words were not small. Walker could tell from the ink marks on her fingers and the frayed sleeve on her robes that she had worked hard to learn whatever she could. Her half done hair also showed her state of thinking, chaotic but incredibly focused on specific tasks.
"You can learn everything when you need to learn it. Right now though, you should speak to Walker about getting stronger. Maybe you can use your skills and keep yourself upright after?"
This quieted Bea for a moment before she refocused on Walker. While her eyes were sharp enough to catch that he was also examining her, she didn’t seem to register much about him. Mostly because she knew him as a hero and not a profitable merchant or associated with the merchant guild overall.
" I’m Walker, I’ve heard about your class and how you received it. I’ve worked with someone whose skills caused them to use all their mana and pass out often, so hopefully I can help you get through that." His kind tone seemed to keep Bea’s interest, but it also made her eyes narrow.
She had wanted to be in merchant work, regardless of her goals for doing so, she was involved. She knew that most people did not offer kindness for free. That everything had a cost somewhere in some way.
"You can gain experience only through storing and registering items within your spatial warehouse, right? So let’s start off with some rate ores that could give us a baseline for growth."
"I have already stored an iron ingot and it gave me five experience points. It was low and it exhausted me instantly after returning it. I need to worry about my plans more than leveling up this skill, I can’t be everywhere at once. How would I ever be at every location? Storage needs to be figured out."
She was firm and it was somewhat true. For Walker, he had so many unique aspects to his spatial storage that thinking about accessing it without him wasn’t a thing. Yes, he had a special skill with Alice, but that was a between them. Unique due to their bond and others may never have something similar.
"Who says that? Are you a space mana expert? Have you created multiple spatial skills related to storage or portable crafting, healing, and herb gardens?" Talking his own firm tone was clear, he had been nice but he also could use some steel to make it clear that she needed to consider more.
"You want current information to plan your dream. With the value in your class and its skills you can achieve what you wish better than others now. Merchants will fight to contract you for even one expedition. But why about others who come after? You won’t be the only one who happens in to skills related to space and storage."
"I had a spatial storage skill and exposed those around me constantly to spatial mana. They all have gained skills with small amounts of space mana within it or storage related. So when more people have unique skills yours won’t be valuable."
It was blunt but true.
"So, will you do what you need to learn about this class? Share the knowledge? Become a leader within the merchants of Genesis so that when more people appear, you can lead your dream safely?"
She slowly nodded, losing the sharp glint in her eye. Instead, she had a slightly dull look. The look of someone who understood that she had running wild in her own mind without considering larger effects it would have on more than just her.
But she was a young elf. Bea had time to grow and adapt here before she faced the real mercantile world.
"Here is something called iron glass. It’s a crystal sort of ore that develops in areas of higher heat but consistent moisture. It’s hard to work with, hard to purify, and even harder to purchase due to high losses in transport." Walker knew the transport cost wouldn’t change because the ore was just that delicate.
"I won’t have enough mana to take it back out for a few hours and I don’t have any mana potions left. I can’t afford to take any and pay anything back right now." It showed on her face that even with her desire to plan and work toward her goals, she was feeling the effects of lacking funds.
"That won’t be a problem. I can enhance the flow of mana for you, and I have potions. If needed I can also transfer some mana to you but that will require more focus from you, you’ll need to focus on it and learn to understand your own mana flow. It comes with more work but it is worthwhile since you will understand your own body better. It’s very useful when you want to improve your own skills."
This was clearly new to Bea. Enough so that she was just sitting there staring at Walker like he’d spoken a language she couldn’t possibly learn. A small laugh before he pulled out several mana potions and then began making the area denser with mana.
"Now, how many experience points will you get?" Walker was interested and didn’t bother trying to share more lessons or chat forever. He wanted to help study this and document it for others who could be in the Same situation.
For those who gained truly unique classes that would affect them the same way Alice’s did, he wanted to help before that happened. So that there were solutions for those who struggled with mana and passed out potentially harming themselves when they used these unique skills.
He looked at a few trusted guards and advisors that Gil had prepared here. They were recording the environment and clearly more excited now that things were moving forward. It felt exciting, the atmosphere was perfect for this.
