Mr. Warner, Your Wife is Running Away Again!
Chapter 917: Each to Their Own Peace
On a rainy night in early summer, the sound of medical equipment working fills the hospital room.
Gwen Grant puts down the phone, pushes open the door, and walks into the room. She looks at Miles Sterling, lying motionless on the hospital bed, and sighs.
She sits on the bedside chair, gently places her hand on the hand of Miles Sterling that is connected to the equipment, and softly says to the sleeping Miles, "Miles, how much longer do you plan to sleep? Please wake up soon, okay?"
The reply she gets is the usual silence.
It has been almost two months since the accident, and several surgeries big and small have been done. Although he’s temporarily out of life-threatening danger, Miles Sterling remains in a prolonged coma.
"Miss, it’s getting late. You should go back and rest. I can stay here to take care of him," the maid says concernedly.
Gwen Grant shakes her head, her voice hoarse, "I’ll stay here with him. You can go back."
The maid takes a deep breath and says, "Miss, you have such a good heart, getting married and then facing such an ordeal, yet you still come here every day to take care of him."
Gwen softly says, "I’m his wife. If I don’t take care of him, who will?" 𝒻𝘳𝘦𝘦𝘸ℯ𝒷𝘯𝘰𝑣ℯ𝑙.𝘤𝑜𝘮
"Ah, but Miss, you know deep down that your marriage isn’t pure. You hardly had any interaction before, and it’s only been two days since the wedding. Maybe you should listen to the madam and get a divorce, then you wouldn’t have to..."
"Don’t say those things in front of me," Gwen interrupts the maid, displeased.
The maid earnestly says, "The madam is thinking of your well-being. What if he never wakes up? Will you take care of him for a lifetime? You’re still young, you can divorce and start a new life, don’t let your youth slip away."
Gwen says, "I married him because I love him, so don’t let me hear the word ’divorce’ again. Just go, there’s nothing left for you to do here."
The maid can only helplessly shake her head and turn to leave the room.
Gwen looks at Miles Sterling lying on the hospital bed, torn between hoping for him to wake and slightly fearing it.
She fears that if Miles wakes up, his heart will still be longing for Vanessa Sterling.
If that’s the case, then it’s better for him not to wake up.
At least as things are now, Miles can’t go anywhere and remains by her side every moment.
The rain outside gradually intensifies.
Vanessa Sterling just then puts down her paintbrush and gets up to close the balcony window.
This period of peaceful living makes her feel quite content.
Since Miles Sterling’s accident, Gwen has not come to trouble her.
She never inquires about their matters nor shows concern about Miles Sterling’s condition.
But she occasionally sees in the news that Miles Sterling is still in a coma.
Since Miles Sterling’s accident, she has not visited the hospital to see him even once.
She herself doesn’t want to go, and the Sterling family and Gwen likely don’t wish for her to go either.
She now even fears Miles Sterling’s awakening, afraid that his waking will once again disturb her peaceful life.
"Meow~" Blackie, at some unknown point, wakes up and affectionately circles her feet.
Vanessa bends down to hold Blackie in her arms and turns back into the room.
Blackie is no longer the skinny little kitten of the past; he’s grown round and plump, though still as affectionate as ever.
She only took Blackie in to raise herself after Miles Sterling’s accident.
She previously thought that after she left, Miles Sterling wouldn’t care about Blackie’s wellbeing.
It was only recently that she learned Miles Sterling had sent a maid over, specifically to take care of the little cat that she had once picked up off the street.
Perhaps Miles Sterling really has changed, become slightly more humane.
As long as Miles Sterling doesn’t pose a threat to her, she hopes that even if they are not in touch in the future, each could live well in their own way.
