Chapter 60: Humans are fascinating

Upon arriving at Camel Tower, Oslo immediately sprinted toward his room. He wanted to enter the space and inform the chief about the situation in City B so they could prepare or change their route if necessary.

Meanwhile, Xander was monitoring the installation of CCTV on the 28th floor. His eyes darted between the technician and the live feed, where he caught sight of Oslo’s frantic movements. Concern surged within him, prompting Xander to check on his friend.

’What could be so important that it warranted such haste?’

"Sir, how long will it take to finish the installation?" Xander asked the technician.

"There are still a lot of wires that need to be connected. It should be done in a couple of hours," the technician replied.

"Then I’ll leave for a moment."

The technician nodded, then returned to his work.

Xander quickly made his way downstairs and knocked on Oslo’s door, but received no answer.

’Maybe he entered Paradise.’

Returning to his own room, he entered the space.

Inside, the team was busy with their tasks when the communication device beeped again. Curious, they immediately answered it. As they heard Oslo’s voice, their brows furrowed slightly; they had just met a while ago.

"I have bad news from City B," Oslo said seriously.

He then relayed the troubling news about the current situation in City A and the rise of criminal activity in City B, his tone grave as he outlined the potential threats Elena and Ethan might face.

While the team discussed the city’s situation, Elena and Ethan were carefully making their way to a safe spot.

The street before them resembled a muddy wasteland, littered with debris—broken glass, splintered wood, and personal belongings scattered everywhere. Uprooted trees lay overturned, their roots stretching grotesquely into the ground. The ocean had receded, leaving only boats stranded far from the water.

"Wife, be careful; this mud is way too sticky. If you’re not careful, it might pull your shoes off or trip you. Hold my hand," Ethan urged, his voice laced with concern.

’Haist, her husband... really thinks she’s too weak. What should I do to ease his worry?’

"Okay... okay, but don’t just focus on me. I’ll say it again: please prioritize yourself, okay?" she replied, gently urging him to look after his own well-being, too.

Ethan simply smiled and carefully took her hand to assist her.

"No way; the wife should always come first," he declared proudly.

Elena rolled her eyes but couldn’t help but smile.

"Sweet talk, huh? You’ve become the master of all romantic sweet lines."

But deep down, her heart jolted with joy; her husband’s tirade of sweet confessions made her feel cherished and blush most of the time.

Seeing his wife smile brought Ethan relief.

He wanted to ensure that she didn’t carry too much burden and that her smile would never fade, even amidst the chaos of this disaster.

"As long as you’re happy, I will always confess to you every day. Wife, I love you," Ethan continued his affectionate tirade.

Elena simply rolled her eyes again, but her heart swelled as she carefully navigated the muddy, debris-filled street.

Unbeknownst to her, their playful bickering worked wonders, creating a sense of ease amidst the disaster surrounding them

As they walked closer to the area where the tsunami had hit the hardest, they were met with a harrowing scene. Overturned cars lay filled with mud, their windows shattered and doors flung open, a grim reminder of the tsunami’s devastation.

The most chilling sight was lifeless bodies, partially submerged in the muck. While others were piled in the street by rescuers, making it easier for their loved ones to find them. The surrounding atmosphere was thick with despair, and the cries of the grieving echoed around them, pleading for the return of life to those they had lost.

A mother’s wrenching cries pierced through the chaos, "Huhuuhhu, my son, why is this world so cruel to you?"

Her voice was filled with anguish, a heart-wrenching testament to the loss she had suffered.

Another voice rose in lament, cursing the government for its unresponsive rescue efforts during the tsunami. "We pay for this government, but they abandoned us!"

Elena couldn’t help but sigh.

’What did they want? For rescuers to dash into the ongoing strong current of waves?’

’They were also human, with families waiting for them to return.’

’People might call you a hero, but if you died, what would happen to your family? Heh...’

Elena remembered in her past life when her husband was still the police chief, actively rescuing people from floods. But after he was seriously injured and nearly died, instead of being thanked, he was blamed for not responding quickly enough and for the lives lost due to starvation

’Humans are truly fascinating, often in troubling ways. Their kindness can quickly turn into a need to blame others during tough times, and instead of supporting those who are trying to help them, they often attack their benefactors. Their compassion disappears, replaced by a strong urge to find someone to blame. The way they twist stories to create villains is both confusing and frustrating.’

This was also the time when her Uncle William schemed against them, taking advantage of Ethan’s serious injury. He hired tugs to rob them, fully aware that they couldn’t defend themselves.

Speaking of her Uncle William, ’I hope they’re still alive. I haven’t yet slapped them hard enough. My revenge is not over yet.’

Afterward, Elena thought, ’Of course they’re alive; they’re among the favored ones. This heaven is so strange—it randomly favors disgusting people. I hope its grip will soon lessen. Let’s see if these people can still hide from the force of Heaven’s will that protects them.’

Seeing his wife’s unusual expression, Ethan felt a wave of concern.

"Wife, are you okay?"

"Hmmp, let’s walk faster and try to get some news to the evacuation center," Elena suggested, as she pushed aside her thoughts.

They resumed walking, their pace quickening as they navigated through the debris-strewn streets. Around them, other people were searching for their loved ones; their faces were pale, etched with shock and fear.

Wailing sirens echoed in the distance, signaling the arrival of emergency workers rushing in to assist the injured.

Before they could enter the evacuation center, Elena paused, a DING [Emergency] echoing in her mind. It was the alert she had set on the Golden Tablet—a trigger rule that enabled her team to communicate with her during emergencies.

"Husband, wait," she said, her expression shifting from concern to urgency.

"I just received an emergency alert from the team."

Without hesitation, they found a secluded area away from the chaos of the streets. Once they were out of sight, they entered the space.
