Chapter 80: Crazy Bitch

At the head of the crowd stood our headmistress, Mia Rhyden, smiling while surrounded by a group of other teachers.

She must have already explained what had happened to the rest of us; that was the only thing that could explain their normal reactions after looking at us.

"Everyone is finally here," Mia spoke up, looking at us with a disdainful look on her face. "You can ask your classmates for the important details cause I am not explaining it all over again."

At the same time, the army of doctors rushed towards us, checking our wounds.

"First of all, let me congratulate everyone in this compound for experiencing your first battle. What you experienced out there was only a mere glimpse of your future, so if any of you have any complaints or don’t agree with the way we do things here, it’s best for you to quit now; it is the best time. We don’t wish to waste our already limited resources on a bunch of wastes."

"As for those who, despite facing all of that, still wish to stay, first of all, let me praise you for your bravery. Next, let me tell you, your performance out there was terrible, running around like a headless chicken, breaking formation the moment things started going wrong."

"This is war; things will always go wrong, and you will always find someone stronger than you fighting a couple of feet away from you on the battlefield, an ally or otherwise. Your goal should always be being that person."

"But I do not blame you for your inexperience or your lack of strength. This is why you are here, after all, to learn, which you will. In the next four years, we will make sure to mold you into the perfect soldier. But above all, I want you to remember this day, the hopelessness you felt when facing against a stronger foe, how your lives were only inches away from being incinerated."

"Welcome to Sacred Vanguard Academy. Finer details of your curriculum will be among your luggage. Rest well; your classes will start the day after tomorrow." Saying so, she turned around and began walking, the group of professors following behind her.

Crazy bitch, I inwardly cursed.

"Crazy bitch." Soren mumbled, not far from me, his voice echoing through the place.

At once, the entire crowd of students widened their eyes, looking at him as if they had seen a ghost.

I, on the other hand, couldn’t help but let out an involuntary chuckle, immediately lowering my face. I couldn’t believe he had said it.

Unfortunately, students weren’t the only ones who had heard the cursing followed by the chuckle. Mia’s stepped suddenly paused as she immediately turned around to look at us.

Silence descended as everyone in the compound held their breath.

"On a second note." She began, a sadistic smile on her face. "The curriculum has already been decided on, and all the preparations have already been made."

She slowly scanned the crowd as if searching for the perpetrators. "We will start the first year’s classes tomorrow. I suggest you rest well for that, since some professors might pick you as their personal disciples depending on how you perform in the class tomorrow. Also-" She took another look at the crowd, her gaze eventually landing on me and Soren.

"The rules regarding the duels for freshmen will be extended to second years, including the ones that prevent a student from refusing too many duels."

Saying so, she gave us a sadistic smile and turned around once again, walking towards a large military vehicle in the distance. It hadn’t even been a moment since she had stepped foot inside the car when the crowd around us burst into accusations.

"You ignorant fools! Do you even realize what you’ve done?!"

"The second years can challenge us for duels now?! Are you kidding me? Damn it! I’m going to kill you for this!"

"My arm’s completely useless! How the hell am I supposed to perform in front of the professors now, you bastards?!"

Students began their name-calling, standing from their seats and walking towards us. Seeing the crowd approach, Soren stood up as well, ready to defend himself. I, on the other hand, didn’t move from my position, instead allowing the medic to continue bandaging my injuries.

Attacking other students outside of a dueling arena was absolutely forbidden, not to mention the place was crawling with guards watching our every move.

Plus, I couldn’t really care less about whether a professor picked me or not. Most of them had already been bought by the three houses. Me being picked by one of them was only going to push me further into this whole mess.

"I must remind you that violence among students outside of duels will result in an immediate expulsion." The screams and shouts paused as a gruff voice spoke from the other side of the compound, standing in front of large buses that I was presuming to take us to the campus.

"Those of you who have completed primary first aid, please board the buses behind me in an orderly manner. If your injuries are more severe, you’ll be taken to the hospital first."

I knew nothing was going to happen. I looked at my side towards the medic, who was applying some sort of healing paste to my arm, sending a burning sensation throughout my entire body.

If only I could use the healing pills Uncle had given me. Unfortunately, it would be too suspicious if I showed up in class looking all fine while my classmates were all battered up, not to mention I had already used those as an excuse to explain my sudden increase in strength.

Once I was done with the first aid, I slowly got up and began walking to the buses, limping. Even though my pain tolerance had stretched to an unprecedented level in the Wastes, and this couldn’t even come close to the top ten injuries I had suffered, I still had to keep up the pretense of being a weak guy.
