Chapter 96: Ree-ree

Evangeline stepped out to meet with the figure. More like confront him for his actions with them today. They have yet to report him to the female chief guard in charge of this training operation because Evangeline wanted to understand if it was decided between them as a group to make their lives a living hell here while they train. Because it felt so unfair to be talked down upon or manipulated to do dangerous obstacle course when they haven’t even met before.

She paused a few feet from the dark figure as the light of the moon cast dull blue rays of light on them each. The snow falling softly on her braided hair and caressing his now dark-red hair. That wasn’t the only thing that has changed about him since today’s lesson. He was taller and looked different now in many areas. But the brooding and dangerous aura still radiating heavily from him. She could still feel it, even if she wasn’t that close to him.

Evangeline stood there confused wondering just who this enigma was and his purpose here and why he seemed to hate her so much. Stepping into her life to instill an unhealthy amount of fear as best as he could. She could never forget that night they first met at the moon dance festival. It was funny how she felt like she has known him way back before the moon dance festival. He didn’t seem like a stranger in her past live as well, which was so bizarre and unsettling.

She moved to take a look at what he was doing out here all alone. He was so deeply invested in doing it that he did not notice her coming close behind his couched figure.

When she was close enough to see what he was up to, Evangeline’s mind was blown again at the number of sticks, leaves, and stones he gathered to himself, and he seemed to be messing around with it?

No.

She stepped closer and tried to understand what he was doing. It wouldn’t make sense what he was doing to these dry leaves, stones, and twigs to anyone but somehow...

A sharp image overcame her senses, having her gasping and falling back several feet. This alarmed Darkness at the knowledge of someone lurking behind him the entire time, and he didn’t sense their presence at all.

Evangeline held on to her head like she was going to go crazy as memories upon memories that have been forcefully buried by him came and were overlapping each other in fast, painful reels. Memories with him in her past life and this new one flooded her in one go, and it hurt like her trying to process and familiarize herself with them.

Sweet memories of Ree-ree and the feelings that came with it.

The Demon Prince and how she wandered off to her territory, whipped mercilessly by one of his demons, and how he spared her life and sent her back home to her people safely.

The first night she met him when she was just still new in this world.

When he mumbled her real name that night during the celebration of the new year in this world.

The dummy she set in flames and his eerie promise of ending her life because of it.

The longing in his eyes whenever he stares at her....how she confuses his touch with that of the one she once experienced with her imaginary lover moments before her death.

When he called to her with one look across the street in her previous world and lead her to her death...

’’Ah!’’

It all came crashing down, bringing a huge amount of pain in her eyes.

How did she get to the point of forgetting everything about Ree-ree and her random encounters with this evil entity before her?

Darkness rose to his feet and turned to face who dared invaded his privacy. The small twig he held in his hands slipped from his hands at who it was.

Her teary blue eyes wandered off to read the sentence he wrote on the snow with the technique she invented herself for their means of conversation between them when he was just still an invisible phantom to her.

Eva’s lips parted in shock at the memory of this. It was only her and Ree-ree that should know about this.

She suddenly locked eyes with him.

How come the demon prince in this universe know about this secret technique between them? Why is he even disguising as someone else to be their trainer, only to come and make their lives a living hell?

Why isn’t she running for the hills to be face with the devil of this world, all alone with no one to come and save her should he try to take her life?

What exactly is happening? Why do things just keep getting increasingly confusing the longer she remained in this world?

Her eyes went to the words created neatly on the snow by him through her and Ree-ree’s secret communication technique to understand the words again. But it all vanished when he stretched forth his dark gloved hands beside him the moment she did.

Which made her to suspect him the more. She wanted to ask him how he learnt to communicate like this but wouldn’t it only bring her out as being a fraud. She decided to just brush it off and see it as nothing. 𝚏𝕣𝐞𝗲𝐰𝕖𝐛𝐧𝕠𝕧𝚎𝚕.𝐜𝚘𝗺

There were bigger problems than wanting to know how he learnt to communicate like that. Like how he was the demon prince all along disguising as their teacher and was this close to taking all of their lives earlier today!

How was she going to get out of this situation without it costing her life?

Should she still pretend like she could not remember or recognize who he was?

Or should she just run without looking back?

Eva slowly began to back away while holding his gaze on her in terror.

But then a thought occurred in her once more which had her stopping. He wasn’t making any efforts to harm or endanger her like she imagined. He just stood there looking eerie, dangerous, otherworldly beautiful and refusing not to take his eyes from her.

Darkness was calm about this because he still believed she does not remember anything about him being the demon prince or her beloved Ree-ree in her past life. It was meaningless trying to hide what he was doing from her.

It was even meaningless staring at her like this when she effortlessly drove him to the point of wanting her to be killed by her actions observed by him in the last few days and hours.

It was meaningless being here with her.

He should just leave and return to the dungeons and plan his new surprise attacks on more unsuspecting kingdoms. He has a goal to reach if he ever wants his wish to be fulfilled by the water spirits—not to be so deeply wounded seeing her happier with someone else.

Someone who isn’t invisible and distant, or someone who isn’t a vengeful heartless monster like him.

She watched him swiftly turn his back on her and began to leave.

Evangeline could swear to the heavens that what he wrote with those twigs, stone and dry leaves was precisely what she thought it meant.

You—are—my—best—friend.

Only one person could manage to write that with stone, dry leaves and twigs clear enough for her to read and understand the message. The person must have been so present yet invisible. So close yet far.

So loving and sometimes cold.

Perfect yet with many flaws.

Open but burdened with many secrets.

She stared at his fast retreating form towards the direction of the dungeons. She decided to pull one crazy stunt as her heart slowly began to pick up its pace, hoping with everything in her that it wasn’t what she was thinking.

’’Ree-ree.’’

She called in one breath as her eyes remained rooted on his back. Her hands began trembling when Darkness took his last two steps before pausing and turning on his heels to acknowledge that call without realizing what he just did.
