Chapter 384: Sometimes, He’s a Person
"Miss Reed, I’ve been trying to call you, but I couldn’t get through. I just found out something happened. Are you hurt?" Daniel Hayes’s tone was frantic.
’He had only just left, and something like this happened. Someone must have been watching him!’
Chloe Reed closed her eyes and said, "I’m at the hospital. I’m fine. Walker Grant is seriously injured, and the two bodyguards are badly hurt, too. Go take care of them."
Daniel Hayes said, "I’ve already arranged for them to be taken to the hospital. I’m on my way to you now."
Chloe replied, "Okay."
She told him which hospital she was at, then promptly hung up.
She was soaked through. A chill seeped into her skin, leaving her trembling uncontrollably. The pungent smell of disinfectant filled her nose, and when she glanced down, she saw her hands were stained with blood.
She found a restroom and turned on the faucet to wash her hands.
’She was terrified—so terrified she was still trembling.’
’She had come close to death so many times now.’
’Someone wanted her dead.’
’They were doing everything in their power to kill her.’
Chloe Reed braced her hands on the counter, trying hard to suppress the fear rising in her heart.
"Miss Reed? Miss Reed?"
Daniel Hayes’s anxious voice called from outside.
Chloe Reed walked out, her face exceptionally pale. "I’m here."
Daniel Hayes breathed a sigh of relief. He looked her up and down and asked, "Are you sure you’re not hurt? Should we have you checked out?"
Chloe Reed shook her head. "No."
Then, she gave a bitter smile. "If it weren’t for Walker Grant, I almost would have died today."
Daniel Hayes’s expression was complicated. He said, "Sometimes, he’s actually human."
Chloe Reed: "..."
’What a brutal assessment.’
The two of them returned to the entrance of the emergency room, where Chloe Reed asked, "What’s the situation with Annie York?"
Daniel Hayes said, "We’ve found her. Mr. Vance sent people to get her out. She’s fine."
Chloe Reed was confused. "Then what exactly happened?"
Daniel Hayes said, "They were just toying with her. They saw she had no status or backing, so they were just giving her a hard time."
He paused for a moment before adding, "But I suspect their real goal was to leave you without protection, so that..."
He didn’t finish his sentence, but Chloe Reed already knew what he meant.
If Walker Grant hadn’t caught up to her, she couldn’t imagine what she would have faced.
Even hiding in the car wouldn’t have been safe. With so many of them, they would have found a way to smash the windows and kill her.
A chill ran down Chloe Reed’s spine, and her face grew even paler.
Daniel Hayes said, "By the time I arrived, they were all gone. The cars were still there, but they all had fake plates. They also avoided surveillance cameras and used signal jammers. It was a very thorough operation."
Chloe Reed lowered her gaze slightly and said, "I doubt even a president’s life is as exciting as mine, is it?"
Daniel Hayes was extremely worried. "Country A is already very safe, yet something like this still happened. Miss Reed, you absolutely cannot go abroad. You might run into trouble the second you cross the border."
"Mm, I won’t."
Chloe Reed nodded.
Her phone rang. She took it out and saw it was a call from Preston Vance.
"Chloe, Miss York is safe now."
"Okay, thank you, Preston," Chloe Reed said with a smile.
Preston Vance replied, "There’s no need to be so formal with me. Besides, she asked me for help, so it was only right for me to find her."
