Reborn in the 1970s — Married a Proud Rough Man-Chapter 163 - 68: You Had a Miscarriage, Was the Child Jing 4’s? (2)
"I know," said Jie Jingshan. Qin Mei looked at her, surprised. Although it was known that Jing Qi and Shen Qing were close, it was still unexpected that Shen Qing would share something so personal about her sister. "Third Sister-in-law said her sister is very independent. She doesn’t want to go abroad as her family arranged, but she still wants to continue her education. Her family is pulling strings to get her a university recommendation letter."
"Is Third Sister-in-law’s sister a good student?" Qin Mei’s interest was piqued.
"Her grades are outstanding," Jie Jingshan said with certainty.
Qin Mei fell silent. ’Should I remind Shen Qing not to be in such a hurry to get her sister into a university? I should tell her to have her sister wait a few months and take the college entrance exam. Having just finished high school, a few months of review at home would be more than enough to get into Qingbei.’
’But Shen Qing wouldn’t believe me. And I can’t tell her the truth—there are too many factors involved. I might even be taken for an enemy spy and dealt with.’
’Jie Jingshan is different. She relies on me, trusts me. Whatever I say, Jing Qi will believe. Even if I don’t explain myself fully, Jing Qi won’t press for details.’
’For the sake of my own life and a peaceful existence, minding my own business is the best policy.’
’But... such outstanding grades!’
"What a shame, such a shame," Qin Mei couldn’t help but say regretfully.
"Fourth Sister-in-law, what’s a shame?" Jie Jingshan looked at Qin Mei, completely baffled.
"Nothing. Just a random thought." Qin Mei raised a hand and rubbed the bridge of her nose.
A moment later, Jie Jingwei and Xu Chunyan returned with Jie You. Xu Chunwang followed behind them.
The burly Xu Chunwang had none of his usual vigor. His jaw was dislocated and he was drooling, looking disheveled and dejected.
"Xiao You, be a good boy. Go find your great-aunt in the kitchen." Xu Chunyan patted Jie You’s little shoulder.
Jie You was not happy. He glared at Qin Mei, his round eyes full of anger.
Qin Mei, sitting comfortably in the wicker chair, saw the little guy glaring at her. She wasn’t one to indulge him and glared right back.
"Mom, she glared at me!" the little guy tattled to Xu Chunyan, pointing at Qin Mei.
"Xiao You, be good. Go find your great-aunt in the kitchen," Jie Jingwei said sternly to Jie You. ’He has to get this sorted out before Dad gets home from work. If Dad finds out he brought his brother-in-law to the Jie Family home, he’ll kick all three of them out.’
’He didn’t want to live at the Xu Family’s place, nor in the apartment the machinery factory had assigned to his father. Besides, his grandparents were living in the factory apartment.’
"Xiao You, your great-aunt is making something delicious," Xu Chunyan coaxed her son.
The little guy’s eyes lit up. He happily ran toward the kitchen, calling out sweetly, "Great-aunt, I’m back!"
"Little glutton," Qin Mei muttered under her breath. ’No wonder he’s so chubby. If they keep feeding him like this, he’ll end up looking just like Xu Chunwang.’
"Second Brother, Second Sister-in-law," Jie Jingshan called out.
"Jing Qi, is your leg any better?" It was rare for Xu Chunyan to show any concern for Jie Jingshan.
Jie Jingshan was taken aback. She was very unaccustomed to Xu Chunyan’s concern. "Same as always."
Hearing this, Xu Chunyan was inwardly delighted, but her face was a mask of sorrow. She patted Jie Jingshan’s shoulder and said encouragingly, "Don’t worry. Your Fourth Sister-in-law isn’t a goddess. Just be patient and give her time. One day, she’ll cure your leg."
Qin Mei shot Xu Chunyan a cold glance. She couldn’t detect a shred of sincerity in her encouragement for Jing Qi.
"Chunyan," Jie Jingwei prompted. ’Time is tight, and she’s wasting it on Jing Qi.’ A wave of regret washed over him. ’I shouldn’t have been so soft-hearted and agreed to let her bring her brother to the Jie Family home to get Qin Mei to fix his jaw.’
Xu Chunyan was also anxious. ’Qiao Yanqiu had crippled Chunwang, severing the Xu Family’s bloodline. Their hatred was bone-deep. Right now, the most important thing was getting Qin Mei to fix Chunwang’s jaw.’
’What Qin Mei had said was absolutely true. They had sought out many people and tried many methods, but no one could reset Chunwang’s jaw. With no other options, they had no choice but to take the risk and bring Chunwang to the Jie Family home to find Qin Mei.’
"Fourth Sister-in-law, could you take a look at my brother’s jaw?" Xu Chunyan asked, looking at Qin Mei obsequiously.
Qin Mei met her gaze. ’Inside, Xu Chunyan probably wants to slice me into a thousand pieces, yet she still has to force a smile. It must be so difficult for her.’
"One thousand," Qin Mei said, holding up one finger.
Xu Chunyan sucked in a sharp breath. Suppressing the towering hatred inside her, she forced a smile. "Fourth Sister-in-law, since we’re sisters-in-law, how about five hundred... six hundred..."
"One thousand it is," Jie Jingwei cut Xu Chunyan off. ’Now is not the time to be hemming and hawing, trying to bargain. Did Qin Mei’s attitude look like she was open to negotiation?’
"Jing Er," Xu Chunyan hissed through clenched teeth. ’Every hundred yuan counts. My monthly salary is only a few dozen yuan.’
"Second Brother is so generous." Qin Mei gave Jie Jingwei a thumbs-up. ’Then again, this was the man who instigated Xu Anshan to cripple Jing Chen. They were half-brothers, sharing the same father, yet he didn’t care one bit about kinship. A man like that would sacrifice anything for his own benefit.’
